Description

ORGANIC FARMING 101

Organic Farming 101 is for Middle and High School students (and up!). The program is rooted in organic and sustainable farming practices and takes place on our 30-acre organic production farm.

Content can be tailored according to individual focus areas ranging from social justice and food miles to impacts of flooding and conservation.

Other topics may include:

  • organic soil health and methods (organic farmers grow the soil, not the crops!)
  • organic pest management techniques—using fire, beneficial insects, and other creative methods
  • how native plants and restoration fit in on the farm
  • local foods and “food miles”—how can we eat more locally in our state? City? Neighborhood?

THE PROGRAM

Organic Farming 101 is a 2-hour program with two components:

1. The farm tour: An educational tour through the production fields with one of our knowledgeable farmers, where classes will learn about and discuss the challenges of organic food production (approx. 90 minutes).

2. The service project: Learn by doing through educational, facilitated field work. Students will be lead through a real farm chore depending on seasonal needs. Possibilities include weeding, gleaning, transplanting, and mulching (approx. 30 minutes).
