Geared for middle & high school students. During these 2-hour experiences, students learn hands-on about the challenges and rewards of organic farming. A 75-minute farm tour is followed by approximately 45 minutes of guided farm work.

ORGANIC FARMING 101

Geared for middle & high school students these 2-hour experiences, students learn hands-on about the challenges and rewards of organic farming. A 90-minute farm tour is followed by approximately 30 minutes of guided farm work.

We cover such topics as plant biology, pest management, soil fertility, environmental conservation and water quality, and the current trend of industrial agriculture in America.

Who: Middle and High School Students (or older)

When

  • Fall session is September 21 – November 6, Monday – Friday at 10:30, NOTE: not offered in October.
  • Spring session is April 18 – June 10, Monday – Friday at 10:30

What: Oxbow Farmers give a mean “Organic Farming 101” course where students learn:

  • How organic farmers grow their soil, not their crops
  • Why we can’t grow bananas—and what we CAN grow!
  • Snakes, coyotes, worms, spiders, hawks—the OTHER farmers
  • Organic farming essentials: crop rotation and cover cropping
  • Fire, vacuums, and other organic farming techniques to keep pests away
  • The importance of native plants surrounding our farm fields
  • How can YOU eat more locally?—take the Oxbow Challenge!

Then we will WORK on seasonal farm jobs including weeding, planting, mulching, etc. to “keep it real”!

Please let us know if you would like a tailored Organic Farming 101 course to match your curriculum! In addition to the core topics you may include an emphasis in Social Justice, Environmental Conservation or Local & Organic Foods.

Cost: Tours cost $200 for groups up to 20. For each additional student after that, the charge is $10/student, up to 50 students.
